Wela’s interview by Tomasz Rudomino

Art historian Tomasz Rudomino recently visited Wela at her studio and gallery in Gasny, Normandy.
He wrote an article about her in the magazine “W Sztuce”
We read:
Wela, or Elลผbieta Wierzbicka. He lives in Gasny, near Giverny. Wela is known to practically everyone who knows the fate of emigrant artists. It cannot be omitted when we talk about the art of Polish women in France. Even the word “Polish” is a limitation. Because Wela’s case is broader, beyond generations, and defines the process that took place in this country, in communities that began in Poland.
To talk about her, you have to be there in her home and gallery. You also need to change the writing mode to the first person, because then the person becomes closer, more friendly, even expected in its honesty. The conversation with her then becomes intimate, crucial to understanding her story, life choices and the path she has followed. Because in a sense, Wela is the history of Polish art that anchored itself in France. She is also – next to Gabriela Morawetz, Aliska Lahusen, Teresa Tyszkiewicz and Maล‚gorzata Paszko – one of our most important artists whom fate brought to the Seine.

The theme of the exhibition “Imaginary Gardens” will bring us back to thinking about how the contemporary artist relates to the theme of nature. How he shows his unique sensations in the face of the landscape and nature.

It is also a dialogue with the precursors of nature observation like Claude Monet and transposition, through the filter of memory like Joan Mitchell. Does the contemporary artist continue the path of his predecessors adding new qualities, or does he use the garden to evoke other themes?

We invited Taiwanese artists to exhibit alongside artists residing in France to make a cultural exchange between the West and the East. They bring back the freshness of “Taiwan, Garden Island” with their point of view freed from the history of Western art.

Exhibition co-curator, Elisabeth Wierzbicka

Oceanic islands are generally small in size and formed by volcanoes. Islands contain a diversity of habitats, which shape three factors on an island. These are extinction, immigration and emigration. Extinction can occur as a result of many environmental and evolutionary factors. Immigration is a term that describes the establishment of a home by a species in a new habitat. Species are able to immigrate when the habitat meets their survival needs. Emigration contributes to the loss of biodiversity on an island.

Taiwan in history more than makes up for its lack of physical vastness. It was even invaded by the French at the end of the 19th century and was “discovered” for the West by sailors from Portugal, who gave it another name – Ilha Formosa, or “beautiful island”.

We refer to the island as a garden with transplantation and hybridization. Through the eyes of artists, it’s flowery, energetic. The theme of this presentation is showcase to mark equity, sustainability and community.

Exhibition co-curator, Emerson Kun-Sheng Wang
