Until May 15, 2023 you can see Wela’s sculpture at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Auvers-sur-Oise.
🔥“Wela’s sculpture titled ‘Moment’ is an amazing work of art that depicts a human skull, made from matchsticks, some of which have been burned, evoking the idea of the passage of time and death.
The choice of the skull as the subject is a direct reference to the tradition of “Memento Mori”, an artistic practice that dates back to medieval times and consists of representing objects symbolic of death to remind people of the brevity of life and the need to live in the present.
Matches used for carving are an unusual choice of material, as they are associated with flame and fire, which are also symbols of transformation and change. The burnt matches add an extra dimension to the work, as they evoke not only the inevitable end of life, but also the changes and transformations that can occur throughout life.
Overall, Wela’s “Moment” sculpture is a work of art that prompts deep reflection on mortality and the passage of time, while offering a creative and unique take on the artistic tradition of Memento Mori. »
